March, spring begins bringing with it longer, warmer and more beautiful days, a period of temperate climate throughout Italy with the aromas of fresh grass and the first flowers that bloom. With the Spring also initiate several events and activities in Florence and its surroundings.

Dates you should keep in mind:

March 25 Palm Sunday
April 1 Easter
April 2 Monday of the Angel better known as Easter Monday

Easter is a perfect time to enjoy Florence alternating beautiful walks in the open air with visits to museums and exhibitions.

One of the traditional events of this period is the “Scoppio del Carro”, the oldest Florentine folk tradition, that will takes place on Easter Sunday and starts around 10:00 a.m. This event dates back to the first Crusade, a tradition of over 300 years whose protagonist is the “Brindellone”, a 9 meter high car that is pulled by oxen from Prato to Piazza Duomo. During the 11:00 a.m. Mass, the Archbishop of Florence will launch the “Colombina” from the altar, the symbol of the Holy Spirit represented with a rocket in the shape of a dove that will cross the church along a long line until reaching the Brindellone lighting the fireworks inside. According to tradition, if the Colombina completes its itinerary without problems, the year will be positive.

You can also visit some markets such as the “Mercato Manodopera”: the handmade art that will take place in Piazza Santa Croce from 03/31/2018 to 04/02/2018. Here, artisans will give proof of their experience and mastery with demonstrations on wood turning, giving life to tops, yo-yos, pens, bowls and cutting boards. You will also be able to see demonstrations of work in clay, with which vases and other containers are produced.

Knowing a country also means getting in touch with its culinary tradition. Among the desserts you’ll find in the pastry shops of Florence, the Colomba stands out, a sweet leavened with candied fruit and covered with almonds and glaze, a Holy Week Italian tradition, as Panettone and Pandoro are for Christmas.

If your goal is to visit the Florence museums, remember that in general during Easter and Easter Monday the main Florentine museums will open and others will be opening with extraordinary schedules so that tourists can visit the city.
